Check out the Scourge of Feathers fantasy serial fiction blog written by none other than M. Lori Motley.

Scourge of Feathers Fantasy Fiction Blog

Things are getting interesting in the forgotten kingdom of Barend. Captain Harlon spars with wife and magpie over his interest – purely professional! – of the new lady in town. The new lady in town reveals she is actually there to work. Work!

In the words of the immortal Vizzini, “Inconceivable!”

And now there’s an orc. A non-farming orc. An orc with a big-ass war hammer and a flamboyantly-dressed minder.

Scourge of Feathers is a comedic fantasy fiction blog with new chapters added weekly.
M. Lori Motley started this project to have fun, though she says she hopes people actually come to read the thing. Why? ‘Cause she thinks they’ll have fun reading it to. I’ve read some of the chapters. They are funny. I mean, not like I’m rolling around laughing my ass off or anything, but yeah… I laughed.

Ya see, Barend is this really screwy place. No one wants it, no one visits it… well, normally. And all of a sudden these people (and orcs) start showing up… screwing with the status quo, ya know? And there’s this self-appointed “King’s Own Guard,” who is really just some shmuck in a homemade uniform, who goes around trying to make money and avoiding trouble.

Lori’s got a good sense of humor. And it’s not that pffft-whoops-I-farted adolescent crap either. It’s actually funny in a dry sort of way. Check it out.

Good friend, M. Lori Motley, is pumping out posts on her hilarious fantasy fiction blog – Scourge of Feathers.

So far, we’ve got an idiot guard who thinks he’s a hell of a lot more important than he really is, an obnoxious magpie, and a smokin’ hot mysterious woman. What could happen next?

Read a bit about Barend, the world where everything’s going down:

Barend could be described as a quaint, out-of-the-way kingdom with cozy cottages and impressive antique architecture. But that’s only if the person describing it was being paid by a travel agency really intent on going bankrupt after a class action lawsuit over misleading advertising.

What Barend really is has to be considered closely. To the people who live there, eeking out an existence, or trodding upon the eekers to create a much more fabulous existence, Barend is home. And home, no matter how horrid, holds a certain place in a person’s heart. Many of the citizens of Barend are fiercely loyal to it. Many of the citizens of Barend have never been anywhere else and cannot even read.

You gotta check this out.

This seems to be a serious trend in movies for kids. Fantasy movies I think they call them, though they aren’t that fantastic once you see them.

So, Melanie brings home this movie, “Spiderwick Chronicles,” which is a take-off on a book. I haven’t read the book. It’s hard to turn pages with huge, gleaming claws after all.

We watch this movie and then she turns to me and asks the question, “What did you think?”

What did I think?

I think they should stop making movies about bratty kids (my gosh, do any kids actually get along with their siblings? And what was with that Mom, blaming the youngest one for everything that went wrong? That’s what they call emotional abuse if I’m not mistaken.), magic books, and goblins. I have to admit though, that the goblins in this movie looked pretty realistic. A bit too much like frogs, but pretty good. The leader was ridiculous. No goblin is going to dress up like a wanna-be Jack Sparrow.

And it is true that hob-goblins like birds, though they didn’t get the nose quite right. And those sprites. They do swarm around like big white clouds like that too. In the summer, it gets so bad I have to let off some protective fire bursts just to see a foot in front of my face.

So, my vote is 3 stars out of 5. Decent story (though its been done 5.23 billion times already), pretty good portrayal of goblins, and the do-it-yourself magic-mushroom ring was cool.

I was having a chat the other day with Fri’gnol-Ma’rtka’al, an elf buddy of mine from the town of “Really Bad Self-Published Fantasy Novel.” He was complaining about aging (damn, he’s only 120!) and how his pointy ears aren’t as erect as they used to be.

I don’t have that problem. If anyone tells you different, they lie.

So, me and Fri’gnol-Ma’rtka’al were talking about modern medicine and advancements in cyber stuff, nanotechnology, robotic doctors… that kinda thing.

He thought it wouldn’t really matter if humans got fixed up with robot parts; they’re pretty much robots already, just complain more, he said. Me? I think some things are better off left alone. Leave the machines to fix the machines is what I say.

The fellas in this picture here are naturally occurring creatures from the planet Zercite-X82. No one is really sure how they breed, but there seems to be a bunch of ‘em, especially in junkyards. They fix stuff… badly for the most part. But they just can’t help trying to fix stuff, or build something new.

“A lot like humans,” says my elfish friend. Yeah. I guess he might have something there.

This enjoyable and touching biography of martial-arts film star Bruce Lee stars Jason Scott Lee (no relation), an actor with a lively face and natural intensity, who makes every moment of this film compelling. Directed by Rob Cohen, Dragon traces Bruce Lee’s slow rise over myriad obstacles–most of them race-based–to become an international superstar in films. Lee’s origins are oddly set in San Francisco instead of his real home in Seattle, but then again there is plenty of artistic license going on as Cohen explores the actor’s psyche through some powerful fantasy sequences. Lauren Holly is good as Lee’s wife, Linda (whose book about her late husband inspired this movie). A scene involving Bruce’s rescue of son Brandon (who died in a filmmaking accident in 1993) from a murderous spirit is plain spooky. The special-edition DVD release has a widescreen presentation, director interview, featurette, screen tests, closed captioning, optional French soundtrack, a (more…)

Whether symbolic or inspired by actual creatures, these five mythological birds amaze and delight.

Birds of Myth and Legend – The Phoenix

Most people are aware of the amazing regenerative properties of the phoenix, or firebird. This mystical bird was described in many ancient cultures from Phonecia, Egypt, ancient China, and even Africa. It was used in Christianity as a symbol of the rebirth and ressurection of Jesus Christ as well. This bird is usually described as gold and red. It lives for 1,000 years and then bursts into flames and dies to be reborn from the ashes.
